Over 5000 arrests in a crackdown on internet pronography users.

I've spent a couple of months in Shanghai, China a few years ago as part of work commitments. The biggest thing that struck me is that Shanghai in particular is capitalism on steroids while China is still officially a communist nation. And it's one of those oddities that is never explained.

I live in Perth, Australia and to go from here to Shanghai was quite a shock as far as pollution and sheer masses of people is concerned. The air was thick with fucking chocking diesel fumes and in their summer, this combines with high humidity to make you feel quite sick. How the locals put up with it amazes me.

I was expecting to see lots of hot Chinese girls during my first trip. As we know, there are some stunning asian chickies around in the wicked west and I guessed that Shanghai would be swarming with them. Not so. The local girls are almost all sickly looking with legs like broom handles, no arse whatsoever, no tits and absolutely no expression at all. Indeed most locals in Shanghai seem to walk around like emotionless robots. I kept wanting to rush up to some of them and crack jokes or tickle them to see if they'd smile.

One of the silliest things is their 'official' Chinese Government TV channel. Some of the crap they pass off as facts on that is hilarious. Remember the first Chinese manned flights in the early noughties? Well according to the official TV doco, the rocket that went up was built by peasants in a big tin shed on the side of a mountain using locally sourced scrap metals and old missile parts! This of course showed "the superiority of the Chinese system and people". I sat there in my hotel room pissing myself laughing but afterwards I wondered how many locals actually believed this stuff. It's a worry.

When I was first there in '99, I found the locals very reluctant to discuss anything remotely connected with Government policy. The standard reaction was to state that "We very happy with Government. Everything they do is good. Very happy." Imagine asking random people in London what they thought of Gordon Brown and everyone just says " Oh, Gordon is fabulous. He seems to get everything exactly right all the time."

The last time I went was in '04 and people seemed just slightly less scared to discuss official policy. I was amazed to hear one guy criticize a new electric train line which had just opened. "They spent hundreds of millions on this. It goes from nowhere to nowhere. They built it just to run it through Shanghai and show off." A few years earlier I don't think I would have heard anything like that said in open conversation.

Does this crackdown on porn by the Chinese extend to those who are pedalling it here in the UK through pubs and bootsales !wink!

Years ago a teacher friend of mine invited me to come out to China to which I said :

"N***a iz you crazy!!!" (he is white..and jewish at that)

You can get executed for peddling porn out there but he told me that is not true as the officers can easily be bribed as they usually do when dealing with prositutes.

Thing is a madame was executed out there and that had more to do with politics than the nature of her business.

I could do without the hassle and not sure if shooting there would be commercially viable anyway when you consider none of the big companies ever go there.

Probably for the same reason
