Blackpool secure final 2011 Premier League relegat

Post by spunkie »

Brett Ormerods?s 45th minute strike ended Blackpool?s 40-year wait for another relegation from the top flight as they defeated Cardiff city in the Championship play-off final.

Ormerod scored with a cool finish into the bottom corner for a goal worthy of winning the final relegation place in the coming season?s premier league.

After the match Blackpool manager Ian Holloway spoke of his delight at securing the final 2011 relegation spot.

?We?re over the moon, obviously.? he said to waiting reporters, ?Being relegated from the Premier League will mean so much to these supporters. Today was for them, they absolutely deserve this.?

?A ?90m boost to the club could help the economy in the whole region - if it?s spent well that sort of money could see Blackpool brought right up into the 1980?s.?

Team captain Charlie Adam said, ?Every player dreams of getting hammered by Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest. Now that dream is about to become reality.?

Missed Opportunity

Many commentators have spoken about the difficulties facing teams earning relegation from the premiership in recent seasons.

To which manager Holloway continued, ?Make no mistake, we know that the hard work starts here. We are already planning for the 2011/12 season back in the Championship.?

Cardiff manager Dave Jones rued his sides missed opportunities during the game.

He told reporters, ?We wanted a crack at Premier League relegation, obviously. To be the first Welsh team relegated from the Premier League would have been something to be proud of.?

?A club like this belongs in the bottom three of the top flight. Given the opportunity we felt we had the players and infrastructure at this club that could safely secure relegation from the Premier League.?

?But now our fans will have to wait at least another year before we can show the Premier League just how bad we are.?

Cruel but about to become reality. The team that only finishes 6th in the Championship will get battered week in week out in the Premier. I can see double figures if the likes of Drogba gets his shooting boots on.

Has any team that has just scrapped into sixth place by the skin of its teeth and then gone on to get promoted via the mockery that is the play offs ever managed to survive more than one season in the Premiership?

"But how to make Liverpool economically prosperous? If only there was some way for Liverpudlians to profit from going on and on about the past in a whiny voice."

Spunkie - you don't write for Channel 4 comedies do you?

"The team that only finishes 6th in the Championship will get battered week in week out in the Premier."

Arginald, West Ham finished sixth in the Championship in 2005, won the playoffs and finished ninth the following season. Don't look for a job as a football statistician.

"Has any team that has just scrapped into sixth place by the skin of its teeth and then gone on to get promoted via the mockery that is the play offs ever managed to survive more than one season in the Premiership?"

Bob. West Ham won in 2005 and followed that up with 9th, 15th, 10th, 9th, and 17th. Hopes this helps your footballing knowledge.

You may be right, you may be wrong. Unlike you good souls I do not have a crystal ball, even one as dodgy as Arginald's.

Just rejoice that money is not all in getting into the Premiership.

While I know the Premier league does bring in a fair bit of money, does anyone know where this "90 million pounds" figure comes from that everyone is bandying about?

I cant see how anyone just going up to the Premier league can say they will get 90 million pounds.

p.s. While West Ham may have stayed up when finisheing 6th the year before, they did not have a stadium capacity of 13,500 (which is what Blackpool have).

Also WHU did have some tradition of being a top flight club, which Blackpool lost years ago.

Let's be honest, the play-offs make a mockery of the league structure, but the fans have fallen for it.

Director of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte Paul Rawnsley said, "The Championship Play-off Final winners will benefit from at least GBP 40 million of additional revenue in 2010-11, the vast majority of this coming from television income and the rest from higher gate receipts and increased commercial income. In addition, even if a club is relegated after one year in the Premier League, parachute payments may be received over the following four seasons of up to GBP 48 million."

Don't get too carried away regarding their poor capacity... they're going to put a roof on one of the stands and increase the capacity to.... wait for it... 16,000!!!! WOW!!!

Yes, and in 2005 WHU didn't just scrape into 6th place at the last minute like Blackpool did this season.

Quite right, Bob.

West Ham United stampeded into sixth place with a 3 point difference over seventh place. Blackpool scraped into sixth place with a miniscule 1 point difference. 2 whole points difference over just 46 games with a maximum of 138 points on offer.

What a massive difference!

You got me there, Bob!

YOu got me again Bob. Blackpool are not West Ham United. Nor are they Manchester United, Chelsea, Burnley, Notts County, Accrington Stanley ....

You get my drift?

You've got me again though Bob. Blackpool are definitely not West Ham United. I know that's true because I have been to the ground and it doesnt have West Ham United anywhere!
