Supposedly the incident which led to the founding of the Order of the Garter. Edward III was dancing with a lady of the court when her garter fell to the floor. He picked it up and realising that the incident could be misinterpreted he looked round and said 'Honi soit qui mal y pense.', the motto of that order. 'Evil be to him who evil thinks.' is how it is translated in history textbooks, leading to the schoolboy 'humour' 'Evil be to him with smelly pants'. English kings of the 14th century spoke French. Here endeth the lesson.

My French is restricted largely to the sort of conversation one might have around Pigalle, or perhaps at a fromagerie........

...and you're not 'drunk (again)'.
You didn't sober up enough from last night to be '(again)'.
Oh, what a viper in my bosom, to have such an ungrateful son... [weeps bitterly, exit stage left, pursued by a bear]
