work 30 hours a week for your pittance dole

Re: work 30 hours a week for your pittance dole
It sounds so ridiculous to work 30 hours and earn no extra cash apart from benefits you get every 2 weeks.
What David Cameron dosen't seem to realise is, that work is very hard to find now. I've been out of work since May.. and I had loads of problems with the Job Centre staff who don't pay on time.
The worst was back in 2005 when they didn't pay me any benefits for the whole year. Although, no-one didn't apologise, they wanted me to look for work even though there was no cash coming in.. which is stupid.
I couldn't care less what they'll do to me next year. I still haven't got an apology from them so, another complaint will be made over the course of time.
They're just hopeless!

Workfare
This appears to be a massive, nationwide expansion of the intern system.
Interns work for nothing and in effect their employers are subsidised by either the interns' savings or the bank of Mam and Dad.
In the case of workfare (where is the 21st century equivalent of Charles Dickens and Robert Tressell when you need them?) employers are subsidised by the taxpayer in the shape of the state benefits, generally a pittance.
The obvious point to make is that in areas of high unemployment, forcing people to work for benefits is not going to do much to increase the pool of available jobs, is it? As an employer would you rather employ someone or get their services, presumably for next to nothing? Err......
So what is this plan about then? Punishment, I guess to force people into jobs which pay no more than benefits.
Cheers

Re: Workfare
Surely by law they have to pay the minimum wage? I would think they would be breaking their own law?
So a person must spend 30 hours doing what? Cleaning up the dog shit?
Someone who is out of work should be spending that time looking for work going for interviews etc. Seems like they what to completly destroy a persons confidence and humiliate them.
Why don't they go after the big bucks. Vodaphone who don't pay their tax? No Vodaphone are mates of Dodgy Dave the useless incompetent buffoon.

"Surely by law they have to pay the minimum wage? I would think they would be breaking their own law?"
This is the case with interns and a number of interns who have worked for free have successfully brought cases under employment law.
With regard to workfare, I do not think you are right. For example, people convicted of crimes do community service without getting the minimum wage. Provided the necessary legislation is available to support this then I think it would be legal.
"Why don't they go after the big bucks."
Well you know the answer to that? The Tories are owned by high finance and big business and the Labour government were far too keen on appearing like watered down Tories to do anything much themselves on this issue.
Cheers

Whilst I sympathise with the genuine unemployed, ie the unemployed that Beveridge had in mind when he created the most wonderful welfare system in the World. You know, people who work hard and find themselves thrown out of work or who cannot work for genuine reasons, you know who I mean.......I think? May I must ask the Great Brains of BGAFD this question.
What does one do about the claim that there are at least 10's 1000's of shirkers and wasters who never intend to work under any circumstances and simply want to claim any and every benefit that they can get their hands on?
Is this just a spurious amd malicious rumour put about by the Daily Mail and in fact there are no people that abuse the welfare system and all the unemployed are genuine claimants and are being brutally crushed by the evil that is the Tory Government? That well balanced newspaper The Daily Mirror would have you believe this.
On the other hand if you believe the claim that huge numbers abuse the system, what do you think should be done to remedy the situation?
I genuinely don't have a clue because the problem is so politicised. The New Labour fanatics will say throw money at anyone who asks for it and don't ask questions, though I don't think Beveridge had this in mind. The blue rinse brigade says, "Get on her bike, you bunch of scoungers or we'll birch you and your family!"
As usual, both parties have as much imagination on this topic as a lobotomised man in a coma, I wonder if anyone on BGAFD has any creative ideas other than screaming the usual, worn out, political dogma crap, through a loud hailer at everyone?

Jim indeed there are two groups
- those who are out of work and want to work. A significant proportion of this group were earning significantly more than basic wage and were providing a reasonable standard of living for their family, paying mortgage, building a pension fund etc before being made redundant.
- to quote you ' the shirkers and wasters who never intend to work under any circumstances and simply want to claim any and every benefit that they can get their hands on '
The problem is as Rhino says a massive shortage of jobs which neither this government or the last are doing/did anything about.
Only when at least 2 million more real jobs are created can the second group be forced to either work or starve. If this was done imports and hence the waste of energy and creation of pollution from long distance transport of goods would be significantly reduced plus the UK would be significantly more self sufficient.

Re: Workfare
So the government want to force the unemployed to earn their benefits?
So why can't they force the unemployed to take real jobs that these scroungers are not taking? Or is it that real jobs don't exist?

Exactly hence why about 2.5 million people are classed as unemployed. This is nearly 8% of the working population.
If 80% of these were in work regardless of if by choice or force the burden on all who pay tax would be significantly reduced. The retail sector would be more buoyant so more people employed both directly and ideally in the manufacture of the goods rather than them being imports. As well as the reduction in the money paid out in benefits the government would have more income from the tax on sales too. Yet they are doing nothing to create employment ................
