O/T NTSC long-play

Post by jj »

Someone has asked me to order for them an NTSC 6-hr tape, but I've seen injunctions on Jaded etc. that the quaality of these and 4-hr comps is below-par.
My question is: if the tape speed has, as I assume, been altered to accommodate all the extra frames, will it play satisfactorily (or indeed at all) on UK equipment? I don't want him to waste his dosh......

I guess it will play but it'll be fairly crap.

As I suspected: will advise him to get something better.
Thanks.

The tape will likely be recorded on EP speed if its NTSC at 6 hours. Yes, you will have no problem playing the tape PROVIDED the UK VCR is NTSC compatible.

As far as the quality well thats up to the company who is making the tapes. EP because its a longer running speed than LP the quality will be slightly detoriated. NTSC is also worse than PAL anyway plus if its not first generation then all this well contribute to it looking bad.

I can speak from first hand experience (no pun intended) that NTSC L/P tapes are fair to poor. My most recent purchase a compilation tape called Swallow It was pretty sketchy. Convince him to go for something else.

Agree with all of the above that the quality is below par,
not to mention the action which is in most cases diabolical

The other thing to think about is the life of the tape.
As with audio the longer the tape the quicker it will deteriorate.
