Watched this on the iplayer. I really enjoyed it. I think the first episode will no longer be available on the iplayer shortly.
If you are into lighting, the way they handled the low lighting indoors was great and the outside shots of the moors and when the shipwrecking and the smuggling was going on were brilliant.
Apparently there were loads of complaints about the sound quality and people mumbling. Can't say I was aware of that on the iplayer to any great extent.
Anyway subtitles are available and the lead actress is very, very scenic. She can shiver my timber any time (daft attempt at wit.)
Another daft attempt at humour courtesy of Tommy Cooper (David Threlfall acting performance of the year so far).
Bought the wife a false leg for Xmas.
Why have you bought me that?
It's just a stocking filler.

Re: Jamaica Inn
Jamaica Inn was a good 3 parter, had to use the subtitles though!!.
The Tommy Cooper programme was outstanding. What a performance by David Threlfall!!.

Loved the 80s version of Jamaica Inn with Trevor Eve Pat Magoohan and Jane Seymour.

That's because they edited that version on the ipayer, also the first part was way to dark and they up the lighting I believe, the complaints had been justified. And I didn't think much of this version it suffer with a poor narrative from the start jumping too quickly from plot points. Such a shame I feel sorry for everyone involved in the whole production.

I'm not so sure what they did. I did read that the sound team had phoned in when watching the first episode as it went out live to ask what the sound problem was because this problem had not been evident on the previews.
So maybe this was more of a transmission on the night problem rather than a production problem.
As to the darkness, I am certainly not aware of any upping of the light levels. Have you got a link to where you read this?
I guess in some ways it was a question of authenticity. I had no problem with the light levels. After all, how light would it be inside a pub in winter in the early 19th Century?
As to the script I thought it was pretty good, not outstanding but definitely worth a watch

Re: Dave
Radio 5 live had a statement from the people in charge and it said the sound levels would be adjusted, also Ben Stephenson a controller of drama commissioning said the problem was partly down to the actors.
I had recorded the first one and it seems different to the ipayers one in light levels.
I know a few people who had small parts in this and their not happy but I guess they got paid and it's not their problem!

Blimey David, you complain about Chelsea under Mourinho being boring yet you enjoyed this 3 hour waste of time?
Forgetting the sound issues that many complained about when it was originally broadcast (rather than the enhanced iPlayer version), large parts of the story were glossed over or omitted altogether, yet somehow almost nothing happened in the first episode. There was only about 5 or 6 minutes worth watching in that first hour, yet so much was missed out... and you "enjoyed" it?
No wonder you find Chelsea boring... you're brain is arse to front and you obviously can't tell black from white, good from bad, boring from gripping!

I would have thought you would have enjoyed time wasting, being a Chelsea fan?
Despite not enjoying the first episode you appear to have watched the rest of the series. You lads are obviously used to watching events for hours where nothing much happens.
On a more serious note I can't recall every reading the book so I can't comment on bits of the story missed out.
Anyway I enjoyed it. The triumph of good over evil. Like watching Sunderland play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Being a Chelsea fan, I suspect the finer points just washed over you!
!wink!
