Mainstream and porn industry likes to point its fingers at "illegal downloading" for the decrease in profits and sales. In 2011 less people went to cinema thatn in past 17 years. That was the fault of illegal downloading? Big majors don't face the fact that their product stinks and that going to the cinema for a couple of a family of four is getting expensive. They try to push 3D but that is not the solution either. Its is a band aid for the short run.
The same that could be said for porn. There is too much glut for the demand. The DVD's are too expensive considering the content. I used to frequent video clubs and often commented to the administrators why they did not acquire product from certain labels. Their answer: thgey wanted too much money. So what they put on the shelves? Junk, 4-hour compilation tapes, that nobody much rented. These clubs are all closed. So who are the video producers distributing their stuff to? Nobody! Everybody is at fault and nobody was willing to do anything about it. It is easy to blame illegal downloading when you download a film on line for the same price as it costs to buy on a physical DVD. And you don't have to deal with DRM internet usage limits and costs.
Porn killed itself with circus acts we have seen in the past decade or so. Dunking girls in a toilet bowl, pissing and spitting on them, slapping them, making them gag on the male performer's dick, making 7 guys cum on their faces only estranges women and other groups and the reinforces the perception that porn shows and seems to favor violent content.
Since the beginning of March 2012 new regulations went into effect in Los Angeles for the enforced used of condom and obtention of shooting permits for porn production. We still have not seen how that will turn out.
As for the question of choosing male actors with large dicks, there are plenty of average or small-tooled actors who had long porn careers: Randy West, Max Hardcore, Ed Powers just to name a few.
