"I'm an new amateur.." Step-by-step tips

I thought I'll put this here- it relates to promotions in that its advice about how to hire a model, so I guess thats OK?

I thought it might be useful to do a step by step guide to hiring a model, mainly to help new photographers, amateurs looking to hire a model for the first time etc.

1. Budget. Models don't work for free, don't expect them to- its their job, after all. ?100 would be enough for a two hour full nude shoot with most models. Also allow for a small travel contribution.

2. Location- where do you want to work from? Its best to decide that BEFORE contacting a model. A hotel is a good idea- its clean, tidy and central. If you do want to work from home, think is it suitable? Do you have a large enough and tidy room? Will there be somewhere safe and private for the model to change. Do you mind the model smoking? Alternativly you decide on a studio- when you contact the model she will be able to suggest a good one locally..

3. Check out directories - The links page here is good, or a simple good search. Don't simply post ona board like this saying " I'm looking for a model-" it will really limit your choice!

4. Contact ONE model. Don't send the same e mail to lots of people, as by doing that you are essentially making an offer of work which you arn't going to honour.

5. Arrange a date, and what you expect here to wear etc. Assume she will be with a chaperone.

6. Don't cancel! If you really have to cancel, try to give as much notice as you can. If you "change your mind" simply be honest and apologise, but PLEASE try to avoid this- it gives photographers a bad name.

7. Have cash drawn out the bank ready before the shoot. I would advice you pay before the shoot, just so she is happy and has been paid.

8. Respect limits. Learn what "nude" etc means. Its not appropriate to touch a model during a shoot at any time.

9. At the end, ask if she would be happy to give you a reference- she can write it and sign it there and then. This is really useful in getting future bookings.
