Transfering Video from Sony Z5E to Adobe Premier P

Post by puretotty »

Ok I been shooting HD video for a while now... well 2 months ish... I finally decided to grab some of the video off the tapes and put them onto the computer (see how they look ect)...

I am shooting with a Sony Z5E... and use Adobe Premier Pro 2 to grab the video... I have played with the settings both on the camera and the premier pro... and not sure if I got it working right :(

One thing that stands out is the "Scene Detect" box which usually allows you to tick it, but it's greyed out :( This means when it does grab the video it does so as one big file... and not the individual scenes :(

Also it comes up with "No Device Control" and whilst it's grabbing the video instead of displaying what it's grabbing it just as a black screen with "Capturing" on it... guess that aint too bad a thing lol

I just grabbed the first hour of video... it was only 10 gig in size which seemed a big small for a whole hour of video... it saved it in MPEG format...

Anything sounds good bad or ugly ??? Help please... :)

i'd say you should be capturing in AVI and so it is full quality video first.

Premiere pro 2 is abit old and I think it was Premiere pro cs4 that lets you capture HD but I could be wrong. I am using CS3 and it it doesnt have great HD options yet...

In my experience using adobe premiere of any version and I have used 3 versions, a black screen usually means it is not capturing correctly. Have you actually played this mpeg clip to make sure the video is there? Usually you see the frames/video being captured in the capture window as its happening.

10 gig for an hour if mpeg does sound big really to me, as when I edit a scene and render it out into full screen dvd quality as well as wmv for output to the web, the mpeg version is sometime 700mb to a gig. Thats varies from 25 min long scenes to 35mins.

i would say so based on what you have said. Also the new versions have multi camera editing, so can import all your angles and sync them all up. Before you had to work off one camera at a time and just add angles in as you needed them but this took longer, but the new version worked out well for my stuff, as it was just the pov camera I used and sometimes used a 4 camera setup, editing in other angles made this alot easier.

It also sounds that the version you are using does not regonise the camera you are trying to capture from, how are you connecting it to your computer? firewire/USB that is maybe what is causing the problem with this version, where with a later version it maybe more compatiable.

Hope this helps

Yes firewire connection... it doesnt list the camera model (Z5E) in the drop menu in Adobe Premier Pro 2... now all I need to do is find someone with a cracked version of Premier CS4 :)

I used to edit HD on Premiere Pro 2 for a long time and it worked fine. The preview box will remain black while you capture this is normal. Obviously you've connected in firewire, which is correct and you should be capturing in HDV 1080x1420 50i. I'm sure I remember it having a setting for Sony equipment.Try re-plugging the firewire connection to your camcorder until the software recognises it.

These programmes are always a nightmare to get going and get around their various bugs. 30 minutes usually uses up about 12 g/bt and will take about 2 hours to render and then output.

I use Final Cut pro now and in spite of what Apple fanatics say, it too has it's own set of problems and wierdness.

I use Premiere Pro CS4 but find it much easier to capture all my HDV tape footage using HDVSplit. This will capture everything in it's native Mpeg2 format and will split all detected scene changes.
You can then drag and drop your captured files into your Premiere project as required.
Native HDV footage needs to be Mpeg2 not AVI. Or if you are using a HD hard drive cam footage will natively be AVCHD.

You can download HDVSlipt from:
