Lighting?

Hi guys.

I have just bought a decent Panasonic HD camera and to do it justice, I need to go for lights next.

I had been looking at something like this:

Could I have your thoughts on whether anything like this would be suitable? I know they are pretty cheap but most of the cash went on the camera.... lol.

You can buy a decent starter set of red heads with a tonne of accesories for a few hundred.

If it is permament lighting go to B&q and get a set of workman lights on stands.
All you have to do is bounce the lights off the walls or ceilings etc.
Works a treat.

I believe fluorescent lights are the way to go these days. They run cool and you are less likely to have a problem with sweaty models when using Reds or workmen lights.

Personally, I'd consider the more expensive and much brighter kit they're selling for ?250-ish

I only shoot stills, not video, but I've heard many times that you need plenty of light to get the best out of HD Video. With this set-up you'd even be able to light large-ish areas. I don't believe the original kit you suggested would be anywhere near powerful enough, especially once you attach a softbox. I suspect that the suppliers know that too, which is why they mention product photography (which is close-up so needs less light).

Really Holly? I have been looking but all I can seem to find for Red-heads is around the ?600 mark!!

How are you doing anyway? I have not been around a huge ammount recently. I will be soon though, just bought the camera and now it needs to pay for itself!!

I figured flourescent would be the thing too otherwise everyone would get too hot. Thanks for the tip

Would the two lights be enough do you think? That set for ?245 does look pretty neat though and for not a huge ammount more cash.

Yeah, you can get sets on ebay for around the ?350 mark that should do the job until you can afford to upgrade.
