The problem is that while there are so many legal obstacles to producing/selling porn in this country there is little incentive for competent straight businessmen to get involved. There are several players who are one or the other, but few who are both.
Instead, you have people like Marino and Mc, who have both admitted, with commendable candour, that they are in it largely for fun; and when you mix business with pleasure, pleasure usually wins.
Given the problems, it is actually very hard to make a good product in this country, and then market it successfully. One of the biggest hurdles is that, unlike "legal" businesses, you can't just go to the bank and borrow money. That is why British films are usually under-funded. In Germany, some porn companies are actually public companies, listed on the stock market!
So, hats off to our lads, who have perforce to be jacks of all trades, when all they really want to do is just get paid for having a good time.

Good post CAL,but I am still of the opinion that our guys will never compete on a global scale because of the product they are producing. That is not their fault entirely, but they are to blame in part.It is just the same old thing over and over again!!!!
I personally think that R.S is the best of the bunch, but his sarcasm rather than his insight came to the fore when addressing the point at hand.
It was as if he was saying"HOW DARE YOU SAY YOU CAN DO IT BETTER"when it does get done better by the rest of the world. Now if they can,he should be saying"WHY CAN'T WE".
It is because he is purely a very good cameraman,as are most of the rest, therefore totally going against the costings he was asking the original poster to outline for him.As if he could cost it all out himself.
It is on a global scale I am talking about, not just here, and the only time most of his work has been on a global scale is when other "PRODUCERS" have had him working with them.He has just pointed the camera which I have to admit he is very good at!!!!

On the question of competition, a factor which is becoming increasingly relevant is DVD. This means that porn makers are now competing with the past as classic stuff gets re-released. I spent an enjoyable afternoon watching Brigitte Lahaie's last film - Les Petites Ecolieres - and the other day watched Garage Girls (Lisa De Leeuw, Dorothy Le May) and Curse of the Catwoman from a slightly more recent era. All of these did the things which porn films rarely do these days wherever they are produced. And all put to shame recent stuff from the States and matched Marc Dorcel and the like as well. Though the sex was not nearly so extreme in those days, the films could be watched as films, which of course they were originally.
