"we do need to explore ways of making that happen and until then we can look forward to all manner of desperate acts like ACS Law to try and ram the point home that people are trying to do something about it.
Thats how I see it anyway.
They may well be criticised for their methods but at least they can say they tried rather than pontificate its effectiveness."
To me trying isn't enough. Being thorough, thinking things through, and being responsible is far better. To me there's no honor in "trying" if one is foolhardy, morally corrupt, and and potentially criminal.
That's why I'm so disappointed in how this all played out.

I'm not up to seed on how exactly the affiliate association works in terms of promoting sites but it would be relatively easy to put a link to a website in a torrent you could just put a copy of the webpage you want the person to visit this would show as an IE, Firefox file or whatever browser they use as default click on that you go to the web page
or wouldn't a simple hyperlink in a text do the same

Likewise, I'm not up to speed on torrents, but if you can do that, the opportunity is there for torrenters (?) to join the wonderful world of commerce, capitalism and copyright and make 50% on every sale they send to a paysite! !happy!

Re: Porn Industry Targets Torrent Users
Hey yeah what a great idea some sort of torrenting "pyramid scheme" whereby everyone who d/L's the torrent from you is in effect signed up by you and everybody makes millions just like they did in ..........uh Albania!
Ok maybe not such a good idea
But seriously there could be some sort of use of this say my copy of the torrent had an affiliate link in it and as long as i was actively seeding the companies official torrent then everyone who say D/L 51% of the torrent from me got my affiliate associated link to the website and if they joined using that i got a cut
Obviously the software to do this does not exist but i can't see why this could not be achieved

I think we've cracked it, Diggler.
I shouldn't say this but it wouldn't have to be an official torrent from a site. If you spotted a torrented video from an identifiable site, you could sign up as an affiliate to that site and associate your affiliate link with the torrent even if it was pirated! !shush!

As usual you make perfect sense Scott but the point here is that ACS Law ventured into territory few would tread simply because it was open to exploitation and as I said there wil be other methods of recourse before we meet (if ever we do) a happy medium until then there will be other attempts that will be publiccly criticised and we should expect this as all part of this confounded war
Its not unfair to say a producer who puts in a few thousand pounds of his own money wouldnt mind recouping and profiting from his investment so that he can make another one but it seems a lot of companies/ business models (torrents aside) does not facilitate this therefore leaving it open to people like ACS Law to exploit it.
The lines of right and wrong will be blurred because those going this route will prefer to see it as theft and those who get it for free wil not share the same view.
Piracy isnt even the issue but there are those who still see it as piracy because it is being given away for free and while they are not making money they see it as theft so they strike back feeling justified in thgeir actions.
I'm not saying its right. Just saying I can see both sides of the picture and if I was mediating this fight I would have the people on both sides on a sit down to come to a resolution.

Diggler 69,
Regarding the giving it away/ promotional exercise this has been done by a lot of people already. Yes there has been some results in traffic but largely it is still giving it away for free.
Sure you will increase traffic to your site but if they like your product then they will attempt to look for it for free so youer comment about us all being up shit creek without a paddle seems appropriate here and this is where the likes of ACS Law and their kin will wage their wars from here on in
It seems the people making money are those who are hired to remove those links all day long and that may well be a waste of money in the long run if the tide goes at the rate it is.
It may well be a waste of money even producing new content now that the internet has democratised access to everything.
Forget ACS Law, Hustler have already taken someone to court, media companies are doing test cases in the hope that one or two test cases will atleast scare enough people from the practice of torrenting but if anyhting it brings it home to more people that the stuff is available for free!!!
Someone once said to me the www. doesnt stand for world wide web, it stands for wild wild west.
Looks like he may be right

... though there may be salvation [or doom, depending on one's POV] if/when
the internet fatally jams up because of all the mega-bandwidth-hoggers, as some
pundits believe.
If that does happen there may be a bandwidth-cap, imposed trans-nationally.
We live in interesting times, as the Chinese curse goes : -))

Re: Porn Industry Targets Torrent Users
I'm a little bit confused
"Regarding the giving it away/ promotional exercise this has been done by a lot of people already. Yes there has been some results in traffic but largely it is still giving it away for free."
This makes no sense to me how many films, books, songs have been commercially successful on the basis that no one is allowed any sort of preview of the material you are not giving IT away you are showing people a tiny clip or 1 out of 50 pix as a preview
Can you name me a porn producer that has released torrents to do this as i suggested
"It may well be a waste of money even producing new content now that the internet has democratised access to everything."
Well the internet is not new and 15 odd years on people are still making movies, porn, and music
"Forget ACS Law, Hustler have already taken someone to court, media companies are doing test cases in the hope that one or two test cases will atleast scare enough people from the practice of torrenting but if anyhting it brings it home to more people that the stuff is available for free!!!"
Can you give me links to details of Hustler succesfully taking someone to court and winning
All i can find is Hustler hiring a law firm to use the dodgy law firm threatens people solely on the basis of an IP addr
Something tells me that one or two test cases will not alter the habits of 100 million + people
