As Buttsie pointed out, meat and poison. I like The Beatles, The Smiths and New Order, and don't understand why anyone would hate them; but then I hate the utterly dull and dreary Depeche Mode, and there'll be people who think I'm mad to do so.

Taste is personal, and it isn't always easy to explain.

As far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as Over Rated just Over Exposure

What are we rating the artists on?

Studio Output or Live Performances

The likes of Queen & Jimi Hendrix are brilliant exponents of the Live Performance but in the studio rather lamentable IMHO

Each to his own

Beatles were very influential so they are not an overrated band, They paved the way for a lot of rock n' roll bands along with the Stones, Even though I am not a Stones fan. Both these bands have been influential, weather any one likes them or not as a matter of personal taste as many have already said.

influence is everything. beatles, stones, queen, joy division, smiths, jimi... all these were, at some point, major influences on other musicians which makes what they did relevant. however, to throw my hat in the ring, i'd have to go with u2( since joshua tree at least) and guns n' bleedin' roses. here's a question for you, was kurt cobain the genius he was supposed to be? dave grohl pretty much runs rock music these days. and there's another, nirvana. what a sack of shite they were, but i do like the foo fighters. hmmm........

Yeah I'd agree with the Police being over rated. U2 as well, can't see what anyone likes about them.

To expand on your metaphore, they weren't everyones cup of tea at the time ( they certainly weren't mine ! ).

They brought new flavours to the pot. They induced, from that, different brewing/standing times, different leaves, different herbs.

They were the benchmark of their time , and later times: They were what other bands aspired to be.

They affected change in music, style, politics, and even general public behaviour.

Their albums are still selling in good numbers even today.

Whether you liked their music or not , you have to admit that they changed the way a lot of people thought, believed and acted.

You can accuse them of a lot of things, but a charge of being over-rated would be very difficult to justify.

Yes, but almost every point you make can be applied to a lot of other bands/artists that were around before, during and after the Beatles' day.
Again, as I said in reply to Guilbert, its not like I'm not already aware of the points you raise, but some people do carry on like the Beatles were the only ever influentual band.

This place is for giving opinions, and mine is that they were overrated. Next....

More than anything, The Beatles are an example of just how important it is to distinguish between an artist's cultural significance (yes, they changed the world forever etc.) and their actual artistic achievements (on the one hand 'A Day in the Life', on the other 'Yellow Submarine'). People will be arguing the toss over their actual worth for quite a while yet, and only adding more to their indelible stature in doing so.
