They were probably referring to that elusive number one single - number one albums never had that 'it's number one, top of the pops' kudos, though there were so many different singles charts published in the 60's with so many different results even now what was the 'official' chart is subject to debate

R.E.M never had a UK nuber one either(although all thy're albums post Out of time have reached UK #1), I seem to remember reading "with a little help from my friends" as sung by Ringo Starr didn't even get into the top forty, but when Joe Cocker covered it it was a big hit.

The Joe Cocker version was a single Beatles /Ringo Starr didnt realise it as a single .The Young Idea did in 1967 it got into the top ten.

More recently though.I met Sophie Ellis Bextor in Magaluf one summer and had to buy her a drink..........for keeping Victoria Beckham off the No1 spot !happy!
