There is another point too: it's a question of respect, particularly for fellow professionals within entertainment.

Whether somebody should be fired for being derogatory is probaly best left to their employer. But the BBC = a public corporation, and if they turn a blind eye to racist bilge then it implies they believe it's acceptable.
