Without getting into the philosophical question about what evil is, I think we can presume that to be so these parents would have found enjoyment out of their child's suffering and death. I don't think this is the case because why bother praying for their daughter's life?

Only someone who really believed in a God could do what they did so presumably they thought they were doing good. To commit any act, willingly, that you think benefits someone/thing in some way must be born of good intentions. If the act has the opposite affect on the supposed benefactor then the act is bad/evil but the intentions never were. I do not think people who do things with the intent of doing good are evil, no matter what the outcome of their actions; they could be wrong, but not evil.

Call the parents brain-washed; call them deluded; call them ignorant, but I think to call them evil is wrong, no matter how maddening and sad this case is.

This is why religion is becoming increasingly dangerous to our future; once it explained the unexplainable and gave comfort; once it provided a solid framework for society, but the more we advance in knowledge, understanding and ethics, the more it holds us back and conflicts with the modern world.

What purpose would a jail sentence serve?

People like that dont change their views

Afraid its just a price that a secular society has to pay for having the freedom to choose what you believe in and how you go about your life

There will always be uneducated/gullible people who will see science/medicine as the last resort.

The battle lines are drawn up...religious on one side and science on the other
no more so than in America especially in the South

I have no quarrel with labelling them negligent, though, again, in accordance with their holy book they were nothing of the sort.

In no way have my replies been posted in defence of what they did, only who they are as people. That child died because of ignorance not wickedness.

Isn't ignorance sometimes so woeful it becomes punishable?I accept these parents did not intend their child to die and thats why it's not murder 1.People that drink six pints dont expect to end up killing people but do so.Not murder but punishable. These parents deserve to spend many years in jail and I hope they will.
