turan, the curfew would cut crime to a certain extent but if a gang member is going to take out another gang member then he is obviouslly doing somehing illegal so the much more minor thing of walking the streets at night illegally is something he will risk aswell. All that will happen is you will get 'daytime hits' rather than night time ones.

turan, they have certainly cleaned up the West End. I remember when I was a kid the sleaze district was massive - it was all of Soho (rather than just the few little streets it is today), the whole area south of Shaftsbury Avenue, Wardour Street, a lot of what is now Chinatown, and I recall sex shops along the nothern side of Leicester Square. So much of that region is now posh restuarants, clubs, and ordinary shops, and the smut district has shrunk considerably. However, parts of south and east London, that were always poor and run down, are still poor and run down and now full of guns, knives, and serious organised gangs. That wasn't happening years ago. There is very little differnce today between a lot of inner city London and inner city Los Angeles. It is sad, because it is something I never thought would happen.

Then we began to let people in from countries that are either "third world" level or war torn (like Somalia that has had no effective government for about 30 years).

Above is Guilbert's initial remarks. What Guilbert doesnt appear to realise is that the main African/Caribbean movements into this country happened in the immediate post war period between 1948 and the early 60's. Now no disrespect to the people of the Caribbean but their standard of living at the time equated to what we would now call "third world" to use Guilbert's term.

So Guilbert is talking about Britain being a safe and civilised soceity in the 60's after Britain had seen one of the biggest influx of Afro-Caribbean migrants in its history for the previous 20 years. Hence my comment --

Given the racial (note I use the word racial not racist) nature of many of the comments in this thread, my comment to Lizard was purely offhand based on his not particularly strong argument "Its total bollocks"

I dont think anyone is saying that immigration has been a completely bad thing, people came because there was a labour shortage in the post-war years and worked hard. People also had a right to come as they were British passport holders from former British colonies. Some of the descendants of those hard working descent people seem to have lost their way though. Brixton, Harlesden, Dalston, Notting Hill and other inner city areas, were full of hard working immigrant people in the 50s and 60s. They still are, but they is a lot of dissaffected lost youth there now aswell.
